SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara freshman Philip Therp was named the Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, it was announced Wednesday. Therp won in his first match back at the No. 3 singles position against Dartmouth Sunday after missing six weeks with a left wrist injury.
The native of Birkeroed, Denmark returned to the courts for the first time since he suffered the injury February 9 against Boise State. Therp, a right-hander who normally plays two-handed, was cleared to play one-handed last week and registered a 6-3, 7-6 win over Dartmouth's Jeff Schechtman.
Playing one-handed for the first time in his career, Therp's win was one of only two Gaucho victories in singles in the 5-2 defeat to the Big Green. Despite the loss, the freshman's return was a bright spot for the defending Big West Champions, who have been decimated by injuries this season.
Even after missing 10 matches, Therp is still ranked No. 94 in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. This is Therp's first-career player of the week award and the second for UCSB this season. Sophomore Bijan Hejazi claim the honor February 28.
The Gauchos are back in action Friday, April 6 in a Big West Conference match at Pacific, starting at 2:00 p.m.
