IRVINE, Calif. -
UCSB sophomore Bijan Hejazi is the Big West Conference's Player of the Week, it was announced Wednesday. Although the defending conference champion Santa Barbara dropped its Saturday match against Cal Poly, 4-3, the co-captain contributed to keep the match close.
After Cal Poly picked up the doubles point, winning all three matches, it was a battle for the singles points. The Gauchos won two of the first three singles matches to bring the score to 2-2. All eyes were on the No. 1 singles spot, which pitted Hijazi against Cal Poly's 94th-ranked Matt Baca. Hejazi defeated Baca 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2 to give Santa Barbara a much-needed 3-2 advantage heading into the remainder of singles play.
The Santa Clara, Calif. native excels at singles play and was selected for First Team All Big West in his freshman campaign after posting a 20-6 dual match record on the season. Hijazi was also picked as the Big West Freshman of the Year for his performances last season.
