SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Alex Konigsfeldt was named Big West co-Athlete of the Week for his performances at the National Team Indoor Championships in Gainsville, Fla., last week.
Konigsfeldt, who shared the honor with UC Irvine's Chris Kearny, led the 61st-ranked Gauchos to a 4-0 shutout win over 62nd-ranked Troy on Saturday. Playing at No.1, Konigsfeldt crushed Anas Rouchdi 6-3, 6-3. He also teamed with Taylor Chavez-Goggin at No. 1 singles to hand Niklas Jonnson and Mario Rolemberg an 8-2 thrashing.
In addition to his completed wins, Konigsfeldt had a 6-3, 3-1 (40-0) lead over 28th-ranked Sekou Bangoura of 7th-ranked Florida before the match was suspended.
"The award is well deserved and should provide a lift for Alex," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis.
The Gauchos play their first home match of the season on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they host the University of San Diego in a 1:00 p.m. match at the Recreation Center Courts.
