LOS ANGELES - UCSB's Philip Therp defeated a pair of BYU opponents Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center to claim the back draw title of the 52nd Southern California Intercollegiate Championships.
In his first match, Therp battled through the flu but could not get past Mathias Weber of Azusa Pacific in the first round of the main draw. However, last year's Big West MVP showed resiliency, bouncing back to beat AJ Young and Travis Fillmore of BYU to take the consolation title.
First year Gaucho Evan Jurgensen qualified for the main draw with wins over Roman Warias of BYU and Matias Ranier of UC Riverside, before falling in three sets to 2006 Champion Michael Look of UCLA in the first round.
Jurgenson also partnered with Matt Forget to qualify for the main draw doubles, but the duo lost to UC Irvine's Stephen Stege and Fabian Matthews.
This weekend, the Gauchos will host Cal Poly, Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount in the first annual UCSB Classic that will take place at the Recreational Center Courts.
