Hejazi-Therp Duo Reach Round of 16 at Southern California Intercollegiate Championships

LOS ANGELES - After the first day of men's doubles action at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Club on Friday, UCSB's junior Bijan Hejazi and sophomore Philip Therp advanced to the men's quarterfinals.
The road to the quarterfinals started with an 8-3 win over BYU's Tyler Clonts and A.J. Young. In the round of 16, the duo defeated Daniel Ndlela and Chris Nguyen of Concordia University, 8-6. Their run finally ended with a loss to Pepperdine's Omar Altmann and James Lemke, 8-6
Meanwhile in men's singles, Hejazi and Therp each won their first round match on Thursday. Hejazi defeated BYU's Tom Young, 6-2, 6-0, and Therp topped UCLA's Ahmed Ismail by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. In the round of 16, Hejazi lost to top-seeded Harel Srugo of UCLA, 6-1, 6-2, and Therp was beaten by Pepperdine's James Lemke, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
"It was a strong tournament for us to compete in," said UCSB coach Marty Davis on Friday, "but I'm happy with our team's performance."
Despite winning the first set, senior Jack Hui dropped his first round match in the single-elimination tournament to Fresno State's Mirko Zapletal, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0.
The Gauchos will resume play on Friday, Nov. 9 in San Luis Obispo at the Cal Poly Classic.
