Recknagel Highlights Gauchos' Weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament in Irvine

Irvine, Calif. - IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Benjamin Recknagel's upset of fifth-seeded Peter Lucassen, highlighted UC Santa Barbara's weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament in Irvine, Calif., last weekend. Recknagel was one of four Gauchos who competed in the tournament. He was joined by Alex Konigsfeldt, Mathieu Forget and Taylor Chavez-Goggin.

Recknagel, who was seeded 19th, had a bye in the first round of the tournament. In his first match, he recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Cal Poly's Sebastian Bell, setting himself up to defeat Lucassen by a 6-3, 6-3 score. The win over Lucassen allowed Recknagel to reach the Round of 16. He was beaten by sixth-seeded Finn Tearney of Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-3, ending his tournament run.

Recknagel's three teammates all had first round byes as well. Taylor Chavez-Goggin was beaten in the second round by eventual finalist and fourth-seeded Sebastian Fanselow, 6-4, 6-2. Chavez-Goggen then won three matches in a row, defeating UCI's Eric Gast (7-5, 6-1), Hawaii's David Schuster (6-3, 6-2) and UC Riverside's Quoc Doan (6-3, 6-4). He ultimately lost in the consolation bracket to San Diego's Tibaut Visty, 6-7, 6-4 (10-5).

Forget lost his second round match to Jurgen Dejager of Cal Poly, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, before winning consolation matches against Warren Hardie of UCLA and Jon Kazarian of UC Irvine. He was knocked-out of the tournament by Pepperdine's Jensen Turner, 6-4, 6-1. Konigsfeldt dropped both of his singles matches on the weekend.

In doubles competition, both UCSB teams that were competing were defeated in the first round. Konigsfeldt and Recknagel dropped a 9-8 heartbreaker to Hunter Nicholas and Giovanni Vaglietti of San Diego while Chavez-Goggin and Forget lost an 8-5 decision to Hugh Clark and Mousheg Hovhannisyan of Pepperdine.

The Gauchos will return to action at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championship hosted by UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning on Nov. 3.
