Malibu, Calif. - Junior Alex Konigsfeldt represented UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals on Sunday in Malibu, Calif. He was the only Gaucho remaining in the tournament.
After defeating players from strong schools such as Loyola Marymount and Arizona in the qualifying rounds this past weekend, Konigsfeldt fell short in his two matches against Pepperdine's Alex Llompart in the quarterfinals by scores of 6-4, 6-0. Llompart went on to win his semifinal match, but lost in the finals to Amit Inbar of UCLA.
With the ITA Regionals being such a competitive tournament, Konigsfeldt was the first Gaucho to make it this far since Simon Shen in 1999.
"Despite the absence of three of UCSB's top players, Josh Finkelstein, Scott Hohenstein and Philip Therp, eight Gauchos reached the tournament's second round, more than any other team in the event which included traditional powerhouses UCLA and USC," said head coach Marty Davis, who was happy with the team's overall performance in the tournament.
UCSB will continue its fall season on November 4 at the Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. hosted by UCLA.
