MALIBU, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team made little headway in the ITA Regionals Friday afternoon, only advancing two of the previous eight players in singles competition.
Alex Konigsfeldt led things off for UCSB, defeating Felix Macherez of UC Riverside, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Josh Finkelstein came up with the second and last win for the Gauchos, downing Aris Andreasian of LMU in three sets. Unfortunately the luck ran out for UCSB as six of the eight Gauchos road to the round of 32 ended early. Junior Philip Therp was part of the closest match in the tournament, but fell short to No. 13 ranked Dennis Lojola of Hawaii, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Taylor Chavez Goggin, who was featured on the main court for the Gauchos, lost in disheartening fashion to Arizona's Pat Mathem, 6-2, 6-2. Freshmen newcomers Devin Nevenberg and Nick Caledonia were among several other Gauchos who lost in the round of 32.
Alex Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein will play tomorrow at the ITA tournament in Malibu.
