MALIBU, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team started the ITA Regionals in encouraging fashion Thursday afternoon as eight players advanced to the round of 64.
"This was a good first day for us," Marty Davis announced. "We've never had this many Gauchos make it to the round of 64 during my tenure at UCSB."
Coach Davis has good reason to be pleased with his team's performance in Malibu as the tournament is one of the strongest ITA Regionals in the country. Taylor Chavez Goggin led things off for the Gauchos as he advanced to the round of 64, topping Aris Andreasian of LMU, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore out of Santa Barbara High School will be in the limelight tomorrow, playing last year's No. 1 from Pepperdine Bassam Beidas on the center court. Sophomore and leading man Philip Therp made his debut today, squeezing out a narrow victory from Ravid Hazi of Arizona, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. Another Gaucho to advance is sophomore Alex Konigsfeldt who downed Cal Poly's Nick Berger, 6-1, 6-1. UCSB continued its push into the round of 64 when Max Taylor and Josh Finkelstein won in straight sets. Taylor picked up a win against Ben Lankenau of USC while last year's team-captain Josh Finkelstein beat UC Riverside's Raneir Matius.
Three UCSB newcomers lost in Malibu, including Andy Bensen and Alex Gushner. The Gauchos third defeat in singles came at the hands of Arizona's Ola Bakke, slipping past Matt Forget in a disheartening 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 loss.
In doubles competition, Therp and Hohenstein outplayed Cal Poly's Burger and Robert Zachs, defeating the Mustangs, 8-3.
The UCSB men will continue tournament play tomorrow in Malibu where they look to head even further into the ITA Regionals.
