Several Gauchos Provide Highlights at Rain-Shortened Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Mathieu Forget advanced to the semifinals of the "A" Flight at the Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif., over the weekend, while senior Even Jurgensen and freshman Axel Bouillin advanced to the "B" Flight title match, highlighting the first competition of the 2010-11 season for the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team. Sunday's competition, which would have included a "B" Flight championship match between Jurgensen and Bouillin was rained out.

UCSB freshman Adam Luba also advanced to the semifinals of the "B" Flight.

Forget received a bye into the second round of the tournament. In his first match on Friday, he made quick work of Nevada's Victor Ouvard, 6-2, 6-2. On Saturday, in a quarterfinal match, Forget swept Fresno State's Nick Papac, 6-4, 7-5, before losing in the Bulldogs' Jean-Charles Diame in the semifinals, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Also on Friday, Jurgensen needed three sets to defeat Cal Poly's Jordan Kepler, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Bouillin topped Aswin Kolady of Fresno City College, 6-1, 6-3. Jurgensen then posted a pair of wins on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Fresno City's John Karlmann, 7-5, 7-6, and in the semifinals he topped Jurgen Dejager of Cal Poly, 6-4, 6-4. Bouillin swept Quentin Mege of Nevada, 6-2, 6-0, and then defeated his teammate Luba, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, to set-up what would have been an all UCSB final.

Luba's path the semifinals of the "B" Flight included a first round win over fourth-seeded Sebastian Hafner of Fresno State, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, and a quarterfinal victory over Sacramento State's Danny Diaz, 7-6-6-3. Sophomore Max Glenn, who was seeded third in the "B" Flight, dropped his first round match to Cal Poly's Dejager, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Senior Taylor Chavez Goggin recorded a solid first round win for the Gauchos on Friday. The Summerland, Calif., native defeated Sky Lovill of Cal, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. He then dropped a second round match to Fresno State's Siddarth Alapati, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. Alapati was seeded fourth in the "A" Flight.

"We did pretty well today," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis of the Gauchos' Saturday performance that included six wins and just one loss. "Going 6-1 in singles matches and having an all-Gaucho final are both good things."

On the doubles side, had three teams competing in the Open Division and all three advanced to the quarterfinals. Bouillin and Jurgensen defeated John Karlmann and Aswin Kolady of Fresno City College before losing to Cal's Zach Gilbert and Sky Lovill. Glenn and Luba topped David Ayoun and Hugo Verdi Fortin of Fresno State before losing to Sebastian Bell and Drew Jacobs of Cal Poly. Finally, Chavez Goggin and Forget beat Sebastian Hafner and Nick Papac of Fresno State before dropping a quarterfinal match to Cal's Bozhidar Katsarov and Tommie Murphy.

UCSB players will return to action at the ITA Regionals in Irvine, Calif., on Oct. 21-26.
