Top-Seeded Gauchos Edge Pacific to Claim Third Big West Tennis Title in Five Seasons

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - After dropping the doubles point, UC Santa Barbara won four of six singles matches, including two that went three sets, to edge Pacific 4-3 and win the 2006 Big West Conference Men's Tennis Championship. The Gauchos will advance to the NCAA Tournament which begins next weekend.

Pacific dominated the two completed doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead entering singles competition. At No. 1, Arnar Sigurdsson and Vladimir Zdravkovic defeated UCSB's Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov, 8-1. At No. 2, it was Jorgen Vestli and Tim Koniarski topping Carsten Thorstensen and Scott Hohenstein, 8-3.

In singles, UCSB posted wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6. At No. 1, Brotman and Sigurdsson went to three sets. After winning the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, Brotman was blanked in the second set, 6-0. However the Gaucho senior bounced back in the third set to double-up on Sigurdsson, 6-3.

At No. 2, freshman Bijan Hejazi had a much easier time with UOP's Vestli. Hejazi swept his counterpart 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3, it was the Tigers' turn to sweep as Zdravkovic beat Dalskov, 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 4, Elad Stern overcame a 6-0 loss in the first set to win the final two, 7-5, 6-2. Pacific's Moritz Starke logged the win at No. 5 by a 6-3, 6-2 score over Hohenstein. At No. 6, it was another freshman, Max Taylor, defeating the Tigers' Alan Kelly, 6-1, 6-2.

The win improves UCSB's overall record to 15-10. Pacific drops to 14-8. The Gauchos also win their first Big West title since 2003, but it is their third in the last five seasons and their fourth overall.

UCSB will learn on Monday who and where it will play in the NCAA Tournament.
