SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team completed its 2007 regular season on Saturday with a narrow 4-3 loss to visiting Sacramento State.
The Gauchos won the doubles point by taking two out of the three matches, but could muster just two of the five singles contest. In doubles, Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson easily defeated Xavier Smith and Van Dillen at No. 2 by a score of 8-4, but at No. 1 Gauchos Bijan Hejazi and Jack Hui dropped an 8-4 decision to Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Laredo. That decision knotted the doubles at 1-1, but UCSB snatched the first point when Josh Finkelstein and Nigel Barton topped Ramon Perez and Warwich Foy by a 9-7 score.
At No. 1 singles, Hejazi fed off of the energy to rout Smith 6-1, 6-3 on center court to put the Gauchos up 2-0. The Hornets leveled the contest with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 and then took the lead with a win at No. 3.
Despite Dalskov leading his contest on court two, the match looked finished when the Hornets served for the closer up two breaks at 5-2 and 30-0 on court four. That's when things got interesting. Finkelstein, who has demonstrated a lot of grit this season, embarked on a furious comeback.
With the UCSB women's team cheering him on, Finkelstein broke, held and broke again to level the second set at 5-5. Dalskov was still cruising at No. 2. Ramon Perez rallied to post a 7-5 win over Finkelstein. Dalskov finished off his opponent, but the result was another 4-3 loss, the eighth of the season.
Overall, UCSB finishes the regular season with a 4-18 record. The Hornets improve to 19-5. The Gauchos will next play at the 2007 Big West Tournament at Indian Wells, Calif. They are the third seed and will play UC Irvine in the semifinals.
