Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team won at No. 1 and 2 singles against No. 47 Fresno State but struggled towards the bottom of the ladder, dropping a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon at the RecCen Courts.
No. 1 Nick Brotman defeated the Bulldog's Jakub Cech, the 63rd- ranked singles player in the country, by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Bijan Hejazi ousted Fresno State's Sergiu Modoc in No. 2 singles, but those were the only singles matches in which UCSB came out on top.
In No. 1 doubles, Brotman paired with Anders Dalskov to defeat Fresno State's tandem of Modoc and Sam Gibbs 9-7, but Carsten Thorstenstein and Scott Hohenstein lost in No. 2 doubles as did Elad Stern and Max Taylor, giving the doubles point to the Bulldogs.
Dalskov, Stern and Thorstenstein all lost in two games while Taylor pushed Jodi Ballester to three games after winning the first, but dropped the next two games by the same count, 6-1.
The loss drops the Gaucho record to 12-10 overall, yet UCSB remains undefeated in Big West play at 4-0 after Saturday's win over UC Irvine.
UCSB returns to the court this Friday when they will host UC Santa Cruz in their final home match of the year. The Gauchos will be honoring seniors Hagen Brody and Nick Brotman in their final home appearance of their careers.
