UCSB Secures No. 3 Seed at Big West Tournament wth 7-0 Blanking of Visiting UC Riverside
April 15, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team completed its Big West schedule on Sunday with a resounding 7-0 win over visiting UC Riverside. With the victory, the Gauchos improved to 3-2 in league play and secured the third seed at the Big West Tournament, which will be held at Indian Wells, Calif., from April 27-29.
After going down an early break of serve on all three doubles matches, UCSB stormed back to sweep the doubles point and never looked back. Philip Therp and Jack Hui, playing together at No. 1 for the first time in a while, defeated Mark Contreras and Joe Cartledge, 8-5. That win set the tone for wins by Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson at No. 2 and Josh Finkelstein and Nigel Barton at No. 3.
In the singles matches, the Gauchos swept five of the six contests. Finkelstein defeated Jordan Peana by a 6-3, 6-2 count at No. 5 to begin the onslaught. It was Finkelstein's fourth straight singles victory. Dalskov dropped Cartledge 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 to give UCSB a 3-0 advantage.
The only singles match that went beyond two sets was at No. 1, where Santa Barbara's Bijan Hejazi edged Contreras by a 6-7, 6-3,(10-8) score. Therp, who continues to play one-handed with a brace on his left wrist, dropped Gorjan Kovacevic 6-4, 6-2 to give UCSB a 4-0 lead and the match victory. The Gauchos also posted victories by Hui at No. 4 (6-3, 6-4 over Hakop Tadevosian) and Robertson at No. 6 (6-4, 6-4 over UCR's Dershung Lee).
"There were a lot of good performances today," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis. "Anders Dalskov's improvement was evident as he avenged a couple of earlier losses to Joe Cartledge. Overall, this was a good way for us to end our Big West schedule."
The Gauchos, who improve to 4-17 overall and 3-2 in Big West play, will play their final regular season match on Saturday, April 21, when they host Sacramento State in a 1:00 p.m. match at the Recreation Center Courts.
