IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara won the doubles point and the top three singles matches to defeat UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon, 4-3. The road victory virtually assures the Gauchos of the top-seed at the Big West Championships which begin on April 27.
UCSB and UCI battled for the doubles point. The Gauchos won at No. 1 when Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov defeated Mustafa Ulukan and Trebor Dobson, 8-6. Santa Barbara also won an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles with Scott Hohenstein and Carsten Thorstensen defeating Victor Lamm and Alex Sundling.
In the singles competition, UCSB's top three players came through. Brotman swept Lammm at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 3, Dalskov swept Ulukan, 6-4, 7-5. In the match that gave the Gauchos the win, freshman Bijan Hejazi came from one set down to defeat Aaron Ellis, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2.
UCI won at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, all by sweeps.
The victory improves UCSB's overall record to 12-9 and its Big West mark to 4-0. UCI drops to 10-10 overall and 2-2 in league.
The Gauchos will close out the regular season on Easter Sunday when they host Fresno State at noon on the Recreation Center Courts.
