FRESNO, Calif. - A day after defeating Big West Conference rival Pacific, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team lost a 6-1 decision at 66th-ranked Fresno State.
UCSB garnered its only point with a victory at No. 5 singles. Freshman Josh Finkelstein swept the Bulldog's Tejesvi Veerepalli, 6-1, 6-1 to give the Gauchos their sole point.
Sophomore Bijan Hejazi battled tooth and nail at No. 1 singles before losing a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 contest to Jakub Cech, who is ranked 70th nationally. All of the other singles matches ended in two sets.
The Gauchos will return to action next weekend when they host three consecutive matches. On Friday, April 13, UCSB will host Denver in a 1:30 p.m. contest. The next two days, the Gauchos will play key Big West matches. On Saturday, April 14, they will host UC Irvine and on Sunday, April 15, they will welcome UC Riverside. Both matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Recreation Center Courts and each will have a significant impact on the seeding at the Big West Tournament which will take place from April 27-29 in Indian Wells, Calif.
