Recknagel Earns Second Big West Athlete of the Week Title

April 7, 2010

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Benjamin Recknagel was named Big West Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. The freshman from Munich, Germany went undefeated in his singles and doubles matches, making him the team leader in wins for both.

In the Gauchos 6-1 loss to Cal Poly, Recknagel tallied the lone point for UCSB, defeating Brian McPhee in two sets, 6-1, 7-5. He and Lucas Sudow also won their doubles match by a score of 8-4.

Though Recknagel has played most of the season at the No. 4 and 5 spot, he was bumped up to No. 2 Singles for the Gauchos' match against Montana State. Unfazed, Recknagel easily beat his opponent, dropping only five games in two sets.

Recknagel's biggest win this week was his match against Vicente Joli of No. 42 Boise State. With the overall team scores tied at 3-3, the match was on the line. After splitting the first two sets in No. 2 Singles, Recknagel suffered a sprained ankle. Determined to win, he played through his injury and won the third set 7-6 to seal the victory for the Gauchos.

Recknagel has now won six singles and five doubles matches in a row. He is 14-4 in singles this season, winning twelve of his last thirteen matches. He will have a chance to continue his streak tomorrow as the Gauchos face Oregon at the Recreation Center Courts at 1:00PM.
