Healthier Gauchos Get Back on Winning Track with 6-1 Blowout of Pacific

April 6, 2007

STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team is getting healthy and on Friday afternoon, the relatively healthy Gauchos blasted Pacific by a 6-1 count to end a nine-match losing streak and improve to 2-1 in Big West play.

"We didn't play great, but we got there," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis. "We needed to get back on the winning track and with our guys getting healthy, it was important for us to win a match."

The Gauchos swept the doubles point from the Tigers on Friday. At the No. 1 doubles slot, Bijan Hejazi and Jack Hui recorded an 8-3 victory over Vegerd Veskimagi/Alan Kelly. For Hui, it was his second action after being sidelined for four weeks with a wrist injury. Hui also won his No. 4 singles match, 7-5, 6-3 over Chase Oliphant. It was his first singles match in several weeks.

"Jack played well enough to win," Davis said. "He didn't play great, but he will get better. It was just great to get him back on the court as a singles player."

The Gauchos also won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point.

In singles competition, Santa Barbara won five of six matches with the sole loss coming at No. 1 where Bijan Hejazi dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Moritz Starke.

Anders Dalskov, playing No. 2, gutted-out a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win over Vergerd Veskimagi. At No. 3 and No. 4, the Gauchos received victories from their returning injured players. At No. 3, Philip Therp, playing one-handed, logged a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Alan Kelly. Therp, normally a two-handed player, broke his left wrist in early February and will be limited to playing with one hand the rest of the year. At No. 4, Jack Hui, who has struggled with an injured right wrist and had not played a singles match in a month, topped Pacific's Chase Oliphant, 7-5-, 6-3.

Gauchos Josh Finkelstein and Nigel Barton also posted wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

"This was a good win for us because we needed to get back on the winning track," Davis said. "It moves us to 2-1 in league and it makes our guys realize that we can still win this thing. We were so good in doubles today and that was also important."

Overall, the Gauchos improve to 3-13. They will travel to Fresno State on Saturday for a match that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
