SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - For the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team, Sunday's home match against Dartmouth was a case of good news and bad news. On the good side, the Gauchos welcomed the return of two players who had missed significant playing time with wrist injuries, but on the bad side, they lost a 5-2 decision to the Big Green.
UCSB, which has been ravaged by injuries this season, had freshman Philip Therp back for the first time since he injured his left wrist on Feb. 9 against Boise State. Therp, a right-hander who normally plays two-handed, was cleared to play one-handed this week and in his first action in six weeks, he played at No. 3 singles and registered a 6-3, 7-6 win over Dartmouth's Jeff Schechtman.
Therp's win was one of two Gaucho wins in singles. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Bijan Hejazi, who has played exceptionally well recently, cruised past Dartmouth senior David Waslen, 6-2, 7-6.
The Big Green won at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, all by way of a sweep. Dartmouth also won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. UCSB was victorious in one doubles match, at No. 2 where junior Anders Dalskov and sophomore Grant Robertson defeated Jeffrey Schechtman and Steven McGauchey, 9-7.
Another UCSB player returned from injury on Sunday. Junior Jack Hui, who played at No. 2 singles when he was healthy, teamed with Hejazi at No. 1 doubles on Sunday. It was Hui's first action in four weeks and despite the 8-6 loss to David Waslen and Daniel Freeman, his return gives the Gauchos hope as they enter the final weeks of the regular season.
The loss drops UCSB to 2-14 on the season while Dartmouth improves to 12-2.
The Gauchos return to action on Friday, April 6, when they travel to Pacific to play the Tigers in a Big West match.
