SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - With the score tied at 3-3 and a split at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, Monday's tennis match between UC Santa Barbara and No. 66 Yale, a continuation of a match that was halted by rain on Sunday, came down to No. 1 doubles.
"We were the beneficiary of three double-faults," said UCSB head coach Marty Davis. "But sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. That was a great comeback for Nick and Anders."
The six doubles matches were completed on Sunday afternoon at Santa Barbara's Recreation Center Courts, but the doubles contests were postponed until Monday afternoon. On Sunday, the teams split singles with the Gauchos winning at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.
On Monday, the first two doubles matches decided were also split. While UCSB's Carsten Thorstensen and Scott Hohenstein were blanked 8-0 by Braydon Wai and Mike Caldwell at No. 2, Elad Stern and Grant Robertson scored the final four points of their match against the Bulldogs Jeff Dawson and Chris Lawler at No. 3 to win 8-5.
The victory was UCSB's second in a row and it improves the Gauchos overall record to 7-6. Yale falls to 4-5 on the season.
Santa Barbara returns to action on Friday, March 17, when it travels to UC Riverside for a Big West Conference match.
