SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - By winning a trio of three-set singles matches Wednesday at the Mustang Courts, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team powered its way to a 7-0 road sweep of rival Cal Poly.
With the win, the Gauchos improved to 6-6 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 3-7.
UCSB began the afternoon with a pair of victories as Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov teamed for a quick 8-2 win at the top spot while Elad Stern and Grant Robertson needed extra action to pull out a 9-7 victory at No. 3. The home team's lone win of the contest came at No. 2, courtesy of Brett Van Lidge and Nick Berger who prevailed by a narrow 9-8 margin.
Brotman returned from his one-match absence with a vengeance, cruising past Matt Baca 6-1, 6-4 at the top singles position. The next three spots all went the distance, with the visitors winning each one. Stern's battle with Fred Dewitte was especially intriguing, with the Gaucho senior from Haifa, Israel digging deep for a 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 triumph. Santa Barbara was firmly in control at No. 5 and 6 singles with Carsten Thorstensen and Max Taylor enjoying straight-set victories.
UCSB returns home to face Yale on Sunday, March 12 beginning at 1:00 p.m. on the RecCen Courts.
