Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UCSB men's tennis team let its record slip to 2-8 Tuesday afternoon at the Rec Cen Courts following a 6-1 loss to Georgia State. This is the third loss in a row for the Gauchos.
The Panthers are now 9-3 overall and with the win have a two-match road winning streak. Georgia State has won the last eight out of ten matches.
Georgia State was able to take all the doubles matches to begin the day. Martin Stiegwardt and Mattias Skold defeated Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson at No.1 doubles, 8-5Josh Finkelstein and Nigel Barton were unable to get the victory at No.2 when Andres Arango and Daniel Balog handed them a 8-4 loss. Nejc Podkrajsek and Augusto Alvarado dealt a loss to Bijan Hejazi and Max Taylor in a close game of 8-7 at the No.3 spot.
Coming off Player of the Week honors in the Big West, Bijan Hejazi fell to Martin Stiegwardt at the number one spot. The match came down to a super tie breaker after they split the first two sets. Hejazi lost 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Dalskov lost to Podkrajsek 6-2, 3-6, 10-5, again splitting the first two and going into a tie breaker. Skold of Georgia State took the No. 3 singles spot with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Taylor.
Nigel Barton was the only Gaucho to come up with a victory over the Panthers, handing out a loss to Balog at No. 5. Barton took the close match 7-5, 6-7, 10-4.
The Gauchos will next compete in Malibu, Cailf. on March 8, taking on No. 14 Pepperdine. The Waves are coming off a 6-1 loss to No. 5 UCLA and are currently on a five-game losing streak.
