Gauchos Prevail in Close Match Against Pacific

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara won an exciting match against Big West rival Pacific on Sunday afternoon. After taking the doubles point, the Gauchos' strong performance in No. 4, 5, and 6 Singles helped them win the match. The victory gives UCSB a 2-1 record in the Big West.

The Gauchos started off by winning two of their three doubles matches. Alex Konigsfeldt and Taylor Chavez Goggin defeated Pacific's Vegerd Veskimagi and Karl Paaro in No. 1 Doubles, 8-3. UCSB was also victorious in No. 2 Doubles as Scott Hohenstein and Evan Jurgensen beat Artem Gramma and Ivan Castro 8-4.

After winning doubles, the Gauchos battled Pacific in singles, where it came down to the last match. UCSB was defeated in No. 1, 2, and 3 Singles, all in three sets. In No. 4 singles, freshman Lucas Sudow beat Pacific's, Renan Delsin, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Fellow freshman Benjamin Recknagel also beat his Pacific opponent in No. 6 Singles by scores of 6-3, 6-0. Recknagel now has a four match win streak.

With the match tied at 3-3, it was all up to No 5 Singles. Sophomore Mathieu Forget faced Pacific's Karl Paaro. Forget won the first set 7-6, but Paaro battled back to win the second set 3-6. Though Forget was down 3-4 n the third and final set, he won three games in a row to comeback and win, giving the Gauchos a victory.

"Forget was the hero of the day," said Coach Marty Davis. "He reeled off three straight games to take the deciding set and seal the win, Very clutch!"

The Gauchos will play UC Davis Monday, March 1 at 1PM at the Recreation Center Courts.
