Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara's Benjamin Recknagel was selected as Big West Athlete of the Week. The freshman from Munich, Germany went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles this past weekend against San Diego and San Diego State.
In the Gauchos' match against San Diego, Recknagel was the only one to win in singles as he beat Abdullah Hashem in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. He also won his doubles match with partner Lucas Sudow, defeating USD's Nikola Bubnic and Abdullah Hashem 8-3.
In Sunday's match against San Diego State, Recknagel beat Jakob Kowalski in two sets, 6-0, 6-3. He was not able to compete in doubles due to rain delays.
Recknagel has now won three singles matches in a row. He is 6-3 for the season, which gives him the second most wins on the team. He and Sudow are also tied for most doubles wins. Recknagel is the second Gaucho to be named Athlete of the Week this season.
Recknagel will have a chance to continue his win streak as UCSB plays their first home matches of the season on Saturday against UC Davis and Sunday against Pacific. Both matches are at the Recreation Center Courts at 1:00PM.
