SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team battled Central Coast rival Cal Poly all afternoon but lost a 4-3 heartbreaker in the Big West Conference opener Saturday afternoon at the UCSB Recreation Center Courts.
With the victory, the Mustangs improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the Big West Conference, while the injury-plagued Gauchos fall to 2-7 and 0-1 in league play.
UCSB spotted Cal Poly the doubles point after the Mustangs took all three matches to start the day. Matt Baca and Kyle Roybal posted an 8-6 victory over Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson at No.1, Darryn Young and Rob Foy teamed to defeat Josh Finkelstein and Nigel Barton 9-7 at No. 2, and Nick Berger and Fred Dewitte handed Bijan Hejazi and Max Taylor an 8-5 loss at No. 3.
The Gauchos then picked up their play in singles action, winning three of the six matches. Dalskov was the first off court with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Roybal at No. 2 leveling the match at 1-1.
All five of the other matches went three sets with Finkelstein posting a big 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Dewitte in the fourth spot to put the Gauchos ahead. The Mustangs fought back to level things with Young defeating Taylor 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 before co-captain Bijan Hejazi scored a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over 94th-ranked Baca of at No. 1 earning a 3-2 edge for UCSB. Barton then fell 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 and the Mustangs escaped with the narrow victory with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win for Berger over Robertson at No. 6.
UCSB now has nine days off before returning to the Rec Cen Courts Tuesday, March 6 in a 1:30 p.m. matchup with Georgia State.
