No. 73 Santa Clara Tops UCSB, 6-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Playing without three of its top five players, the UC Santa Barbara tennis team continued to struggle on the road Monday, losing at No. 73 Santa Clara, 6-1.

The Gauchos, playing without No. 2 Jack Hui and No. 3 Philip Therp, both out with wrist injuries, and without No. 5 Elad Stern, who has a shoulder injury, had another makeshift lineup in their loss to the Broncos.

UCSB did post wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. Junior Anders Dalskov recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brian Brogan at No. 2 singles and Dalskov was joined by Grant Robertson at No. 1 doubles. The duo topped Kevin McQuaid and Blain Shields, 8-3.

At No. 1 singles, Bijan Hejazi battled with battled Santa Clara's Jan Macek, but dropped a tough 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 decision. Hejazi trailed 4-1 in the first set, but Macek could not hold the break and ended up going ended up going to a tiebreaker. Hejazi quickly took a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak, but after the changeover Macek came storming back with six straight points to close out the set. Hejazi jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the second set but could not hold on and wound up losing 7-5.

All of the singles matches were decided in two sets.

The defeat drops UCSB to 2-6 on the season while Santa Clara improves to 8-4. The Gauchos will host Cal Poly in their first Big West Conference match on Saturday, Feb. 24 beginning at 1:00 p.m. on the Recreation Center Courts.
