SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In a Saturday showdown between two squads tied at No. 75 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, the UC Santa Barbara men's team proved more deserving of that spot with a 4-2 victory over Oregon at the RecCen Courts.
The Gauchos remain undefeated through five home matches this season and improved to 5-5 overall with their first victory over a Pacific-10 Conference school since Marty Davis became head coach at UCSB in 1999-2000. Meanwhile the Ducks fell to 5-2 with their second straight loss.
With afternoon rain forecasted for the Santa Barbara area, the two squads agreed to play the singles portion of the match first. The Gauchos took advantage, winning the opening set on five of the six courts, including the No. 1 spot where senior Nick Brotman topped Thomas Bieri 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Also impressive was UCSB sophomore Andres Dalskov, who won a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Mike Myrhed at No. 4 singles.
Another Santa Barbara victory was turned in by Bijan Hijazi at No. 3, and after Oregon triumphed in the No. 2 and No. 5 positions the contest came down to a showdown at the six spot between Gaucho freshman Carsten Thorstensen and UO's Vladamir Pino. Thorstensen prevailed 6-3, 7-6, clinching victory for the home team and making the doubles competition a moot point.
The two teams began playing doubles in the late afternoon, with UCSB up a break in all three matches before the rain began falling.
The Gauchos will now enjoy a two-week break from action before resuming dual match play on Sunday, March 5 by hosting Georgia State on the RecCen Courts at 11:00 a.m.
