Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team showed considerable talent this afternoon shutting out the University of Loyola Marymount at the Recreation Center Courts. The Gauchos won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point before sweeping all six singles matches. However, the contest was closer than the score indicated.
In doubles, UCSB's Philip Therp and Jack Hui came from a break down to steal a victory away from LMU's Renzo Maggi and Sam Tadevosian at the No. 1 slot, 9-8. More drama ensued as the duo of Alexander Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein saved themselves from defeat as they crawled back in the last two sets to post a 9-7 win.
"Although we got off to a rather slow start in doubles, I was relieved that we were able to battle back and steal the doubles point," Coach Marty Davis said.
The Gauchos got off to a brilliant 3-0 start in singles as both Hui and Finkelstein made quick work out of their opponents scoring a convincing 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 win respectively. The battle soon intensified as junior Bijan Hejazi overcame a first set deficit to prevail over LMU's Jaceu Twarowski, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
At the No. 2 slot, Philip Therp picked up his first singles win of the fall season over Sam Tadevosian of LMU, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Alexander Konigsfeldt soon sealed the sweep edging Ivan Lopez on the second set, pushing his overall singles record to 3-1 on the season.
"This was a big win for us today, particularly because it gave some of our guys like Therp and Hui some confidence," Davis announced. "We need to get them going in order for us to have a successful year."
Indeed they do, as Therp and Hui have combined for a 0-6 start in singles competition this season.
The win was especially sweet for the Gauchos as the Lions were coming off of an impressive 4-3 win over No. 73 BYU yesterday. The Gauchos even their record at 2-2 on the season and will host the University of Oregon next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
