SEATTLE, Wash. - 72nd-ranked UC Santa Barbara and 75th-ranked Denver split six singles points, but the Pioneers won the doubles point in a sweep to hand the Gauchos a 4-3 defeat in a match played in Seattle on Saturday.
No. 2 Elad Stern, No. 4 Anders Dalskov and No. 6 Max Taylor each posted wins for the Gauchos. Stern rallied to defeat Jejc Smole 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Dalskov swept Viktor Zetterholm, 7-6, 6-4, and Taylor swept Aljosa Nipic, 6-4, 7-6.
In the doubles competition, Denver's Adam Holmstrom and Nikla Persson topped UCSB's Nick Brotman and Dalskov, 8-3. Smole and Steve Flaks edged Carsten Thorstensen and Scott Hohenstein, 9-8, and Clyde Rosen and Zetterholm beat Stern and Grant Robertson, 8-6.
The Gauchos are now 4-4 on the season and will play at 16th-ranked Washington on Sunday afternoon.
