No. 70 Gauchos Balance the Books With 5-2 Victory over South Florida

TEMPE, Ariz. - UC Santa Barbara swept the doubles point and then took four of six singles matches to event its record at 1-1 with a 5-2 win over South Florida at Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday.

The Gauchos posted sweeps at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles to secure the win.

Junior Jack Hui, a transfer from the College of the Desert, posted his first singles victory in a dual match for UCSB. Playing No. 2, Hui swept South Florida's Mahmoud Hamed, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3, freshman Philip Therp won his second straight match, topping Mark Jaeger, 6-3, 7-6.

Anders Dalskov, who teamed with Hui to win 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, edged Thomas Estrada at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 7-6. The Gauchos' fourth singles win came at No. 5 where Max Taylor battled past Daniel Daudt, 6-1, 6-4.

In addition to the Hui-Dalskov win at No. 1 doubles, Santa Barbara recorded victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomores Bijan Hejazi and Nigel Barton defeated Henning Hipp and Daniel Daudt at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. At No. 3, it was Therp and Josh Finkelstein defeating Jaeger and Diego Toledo, 8-6.

The win events UCSB's record to 1-1. The Gauchos opened the season on Friday, Feb. 2, with a narrow 4-3 loss to 57th-ranked Arizona State.

The Gauchos will play their first home match of the 2007 season on Friday, Feb. 9, when they host No. 17 Boise State in a 1:30 p.m. match at the Recreation Center Courts.
