TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2007 UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team had to wait an extra week to debut and on Friday they finally did, narrowly dropping a 4-3 decision at No. 57 Arizona State.
The No. 70 Gauchos, who had matches against BYU and at Pepperdine rained-out last weekend, dropped the doubles point and split the six singles matches with the 57th-ranked Sun Devils in Tempe.
Freshman Philip Therp, playing his first match as a Gaucho, posted an easy 6-1, 6-1 decision over ASU's Wes Miller at No. 3. Therp's was one of three UCSB singles victories. At No. 5, junior Anders Dalskov topped D.J. Bellama, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1, and at No. 6, sophomore Max Taylor came back after losing the first set to defeat Murilo Souza, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
UCSB dropped the doubles point to the Sun Devils. Freshman Matt Brooklyn and Miller defeated Dalskov and junior Jack Hui at No. 1, 8-5. At No. 2, Nick Hegarty and Juan Carlos Rebaza topped Nigel Barton and Bijan Hejazi, 8-4. At No. 3, it was Bellama and Souza defeating Josh Finkelstein and Therp, 8-5.
Arizona State also logged wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 singles to win the match. At No. 1, Rebaza defeated Hejazi in a tough one, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At No. 2, Brooklyn needed three to defeat Hui, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At No. 4, Hegarty swept UCSB senior Elad Stern, 6-1, 6-2.
The 70-ranked Gauchos will remain in Tempe, Ariz., for to face South Florida on Sunday, Feb. 4 match that will begin at 11:00 a.m.
