SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A loss of the doubles point Monday afternoon did not discourage the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team, which roared back for a commanding 6-1 victory over Princeton at the Rec Cen Courts.
The Gauchos - who earlier Monday cracked the International Tennis Association rankings at No. 69 - improved to 4-1 on the young season. Meanwhile the Tigers dropped their 2006 dual meet opener.
While the UCSB team of Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov scored a convincing 8-2 win in the top doubles spot, Princeton claimed the point by winning the other two contests. Dararius Craton and Shannon Morales were firing on all cylinders at No.3 en route to an 8-2 triumph.
However, the home team was in a class of its own in singles competition, not surrendering a single set to its Ivy League opponent. Brotman tallied a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1, while Dalskov made quick work of his adversary, 6-2, 6-2 in the five-spot. Santa Barbara junior Elad Stern bounced back from a setback in doubles with a resounding 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
The Gauchos will begin a three-match trip to the Grand Canyon State by facing 58th-ranked Arizona on Friday, Feb. 3. First serve in Tucson, Ariz., is slated for 2:00 p.m. PST.
