SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After digging itself an early hole Monday afternoon, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team rallied for a 4-3 upset of 63rd-ranked BYU at the RecCen Courts.
The come-from-be hind victory improves the Gauchos' dual match record to 3-0 on the young season, while the Cougars fell in their first match of 2006.
BYU opened the action by posting commanding victories in all three doubles contests to win the point. They were led by the team of Jose Lechuga and James Ludlow who defeated Nick Brotman and Anders Dalskov 8-6 at the No. 1 spot.
The singles portion of the afternoon was highly-competitive, with a total of four sets going to tiebreakers. UCSB junior Elad Stern earned a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 2, while his teammates Carsten Thorstensen and and Bijan Hijazi - both freshmen - also triumphed in straight sets at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. The deciding contest was a thriller at No. 5 singles, where Dalskov dropped the first set to Lechuga before rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
There is no rest for the weary as UCSB travels to 20th-ranked USC on Tuesday, Jan. 24 for a 1:30 p.m. dual match at Marks Stadium.
