HONOLULU - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team opened its 2008 season with a tough 4-3 loss at the University of Hawai'i on Sunday afternoon.
Despite sweeping the doubles point, UCSB couldn't overcome the Rainbow Warriors. The Gauchos were only able to win at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. At No. 5, freshman Alex Konigsfeldt made his debut with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 win over Hawai'i's Jeff Fitch. Sophomore Josh Finkelstein, the UCSB team captain, defeated UH's Craig Faulk at No. 6, 6-4, 7-5.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Philip Therp was swept by 25th-ranked Andreas Weber, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2, junior Bijan Hejazi lost a close two-setter, 7-6, 6-4. At No. 3, senior Jack Hui was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Sascha Heinemann.
The closest singles match of the day was at No. 4 where Rainbow Warrior Spence Mendoza edged Gaucho senior Anders Dalskov, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
UCSB will return to the courts on Sunday, Jan. 27, when it hosts Santa Clara in its home opener at the Recreation Center Courts.
