Honolulu, HI - UC Santa Barbara opened the 2009-2010 season with a win as they beat St. Mary's 6-1 in their dual match on Sunday in Honolulu, HI. The Gauchos won all three of their doubles matches and all but one of their singles matches.
In the first doubles match, UCSB's Alex Konigsfeldt and Josh Finkelstein defeated St. Mary's Gavin Leon and Steve Dawson-Roberts 8-5. Gauchos Scott Hohenstein and Evan Jurgensen defeated Lucas Tirelli and Sheris Handy 8-6 in the second match. Freshmen Lucas Sudow and Benjamin Recknagel were victorious in their debut, beating St. Mary's Mike Luck and Andrea Zannoni 8-4. Coach Marty Davis was pleased with their performance.
"The freshman played well in their debut. They were very solid in their doubles match and also won comfortably in their singles matches. It was a great start for them."
In singles, Recknagel beat his opponent, Gavin Leon, 6-2, 6-2. Sudow overcame St. Mary's Michael Carreno 6-1, 6-3.
The closest singles match was the battle between UCSB's Alex Konigsfeldt and Lucas Tirelli. After Konigsfeldt won the first set 6-2, Tirelli came back and won the second 1-6. Konigsfeldt battled in the third set and defeated Tirelli 7-6, thus winning the match.
In the other singles matches, Mathieu Forget beat Sheris Handy 6-4, 6-3. Taylor Chavez-Goggin defeated Youssef El Bouzkouri 6-1, 6-3. St Mary's Andrea Zannoni gave the Gaels their only win of the day by beating UCSB's Scott Hohenstein 6-3, 6-0.
"Today's match set the stage for a good match tomorrow. Hawaii beat St. Mary's yesterday with the same score, so tomorrow's match should be close," said Coach Marty Davis.
Tomorrow the Gauchos will face the University of Hawaii at 9:00AM. Hawaii is currently ranked #41 and has a record of 2-0 after their wins against St. Mary's and Nevada this past weekend.
