SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Three UC Santa Barbara men's tennis athletes will be at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida representing the Gauchos at the NCAA singles and doubles championships beginning Monday, May 20. First, senior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Joseph Guillin will begin their run in singles on Monday while Moreno de Alboran and fellow senior Anders Holm will begin their doubles run on Tuesday.
For Moreno de Alboran, the No. 16 ranked player in the country earned a 9-16 seed for the NCAA Tournament after a stellar season which saw him go 15-3 in dual-match play and 28-8 overall when including fall tournaments. The New York native will be taking on No. 58 Hady Habib of Texas A&M in the first round of the tournament.
Habib primarily played out of the No. 2 spot and amassed a 13-5 mark at that court. He is 5-5 against ranked opponents this season.
This is Moreno de Alboran's second appearance in the NCAA singles championship as last year the senior nearly pulled off a huge upset bid against top-seeded Martin Redlicki from UCLA before ultimately falling 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Last year, the senior also became the first UCSB athlete to win an NCAA Singles Tournament match since 1995.
Overall, the Gauchos have only won five singles matches at the NCAA singles championships. Only one Gaucho in history has won more than one match at the NCAA singles tournament.
Joining Moreno de Alboran will be Guillin who joins the field as an at-large seed after a great season that saw him go 22-10 overall and 10-6 in dual-match play. Guillin, ranked No. 58, will be taking on Gabriel Decamps of UCF.
Decamps is under .500 on the year holding just a 6-8 overall mark, but has played only at the top spot where he has beaten tough opponents including a player ranked as high as No. 9 in the country. It was his only win against a ranked opponent as he has a 1-6 record against such opposition.
In doubles, Moreno de Alboran and Holm, ranked No. 64, will be taking on Ohio State's Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert, ranked No. 13. The senior pair follow in the footsteps of former teammates Morgan Mays and Simon Freund as they made an appearance back in 2017.
Holm and Moreno de Alboran also finished the season great winning nine of their last 10 matches to finish 12-7 in dual-match play. Joyce and Tubert only played four matches together during the dual-match season but won all four. They are 13-4 overall this year.
Moreno de Alboran and Guillin both open play in singles on Monday, May 20 beginning at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. EST, respectively. Moreno de Alboran and Holm will begin their run on Tuesday with the time to be announced. Follow @UCSBTennis on twitter for updates.
