SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore Victor Krustev became the third member of the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team to be ranked in the ITA Top 125 after the list was released early Wednesday morning. Krustev, ranked No. 87 in the country, joins teammates Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Joseph Guillin in the rankings. This marks the first time in UCSB history that the Gauchos have three nationally ranked players.
Krustev joined his teammates following a stellar start to the year. Currently, the Canadian native holds a 3-0 record in singles playing on the No. 3 court and in his most recent match upset No. 19 Laurens Verboven of USC defeating him in straight sets. Verboven dropped to No. 31 on the list. Last week, Krustev also earned his first Big West Player of the Week honor following his upset win.
In fall tournament play, Krustev also earned a big win over then No. 60 Lukas Moenter of LMU also helping him to jump up into the rankings.
As for the others, both Moreno de Alboran and Guillin had slight drops but nothing dramatic. Moreno de Alboran fell three spots to No. 9 and Guillin fell three spots as well to No. 25.
Moreno de Alboran currently sports a 1-1 record with his loss coming to USC's Brandon Holt now ranked No. 56 according to Wednesday's ranking. Guillin is 2-1 on the year with his loss coming against now No. 4, then No. 8, Daniel Cuckierman. Both losses highlight that they have faced some tough competition as they will continue to do so all season long but UCSB remains one of only six programs in the country to have two players in the ranking's top 25.
The Gauchos will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 8 against Fresno State before hosting San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 10 for UCSB's home opener.
