Gauchos Suffer 6-1 Loss at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team is still in search of its first road win of the season following a 6-1 loss at the hands of the University of Oregon.

"This team is better than their ranking shows and the level of tennis today was pretty high," Head Coach Marty Davis said. "We competed well, down 3-0, we lost a lot of first sets but rallied to really make this a game to watch."

The Gauchos (8-6) are now 0-5 on the road while the Ducks (13-5) pick up their third straight win while also improving to 11-2 at home.

Early on, UCSB and UO looked deadlocked in the doubles portion of the match with all three games being at 5-4. The first team to pick up a win was Oregon's Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent who picked up a win on court two over Simon Freund and Joseph Rotheram, 6-4.

The win for the Ducks' duo was a big one as they now have the most wins by a doubles pair in school history currently owning a 58-13 record.

Oregon would go on to seal the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court one. The match on court three ended with Joseph Guillin and Victor Krustev having a 5-4 advantage.

While the score might have indicated a blowout, many of the singles matches were actually very close with the chance for the Gauchos to still pull out the win. Unfortunately, the match on court three with Freund was not one of them as the senior captain was defeated 6-0, 6-0.

Holding a 2-0 advantage, UO's Riki Oshima bested Rotheram on court six with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set victory to put the home team within one point of sealing the match.

While the first two singles wins were straight sets, the final four were all pushed to three. Junior Anders Holm put together a solid performance following a 6-1 loss in the first set. The Sweden native bounced back to earn a 6-2 win in the second before ultimately losing 6-1 in the third. With that win on court four, Oregon sealed the win.

With the match decided, Guillin still put forth a tremendous effort and picked up yet another win, his 12th straight, following 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 over UO's Simon Stevens. The sophomore transfer owns a team-best 13-1 singles record.

"The story for us still is Joseph is still playing incredible," Davis said. "We are happy for him and he's playing incredibly well as his record has shown. We just need that level of consistency everywhere."

Krustev would lose his match on court five, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 giving Oregon the 5-1 lead. Over on court one, a huge match was going on as the Ducks 14th ranked player in the country, Laurent, was taking on UCSB No. 94 ranked Nicolas Moreno de Alboran.

Despite the Gauchos having already lost the match, Moreno de Alboran still wanted to pick up a big win against a top-15 player in the country. Unfortunately, the junior failed to do so. After dropping the first set in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (3) the New York native won the second set easy, 6-2. Moreno de Alboran could not ride that momentum, however, as he lost the final set 6-1 giving Oregon the 6-1 win.

"Nic played a great match today," Davis said. "It was a hell of a match and Nic had some great chances. In that third set Laurent just played loose knowing that match was over and was incredible. When the pressure was still on though it really looked like Nic would take it but overall good performance."

For UCSB, the storyline remains the same: it is still in need of its first road win. With only one road match remaining before the start of conference play, the 'Chos know that they need that win to have confidence heading into Big West play.

"All the guys played pretty well for the most part, and now we have to hope we will be ready to play a Washington team we believe we could beat," Davis said. "I really think its important for us to get this win before conference. This is just dragging us down and has the potential to get worse so we have to take advantage of our next opportunity and come out with a win."

Santa Barbara faces the University of Washington at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
