SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara men's tennis (5-8) followed up their dominant victory against Georgetown on Saturday with an equally impressive triumph over Radford on Sunday to collect their third win in four matches and improve their record to 5-8 on the season. The Gauchos came away with their second straight sweep in doubles and won five of six singles matches in their 6-1 triumph over visiting Radford University.
After struggling in doubles for much of the early season, the Gauchos have put together a string of solid performances in the doubles competition since switching up the doubles pairings.
"We're definitely getting better [in doubles]," said Head Coach Marty Davis. "I'm really pleased with the play at No. 1 in particular."
The Gauchos also received victories on courts #2 and #3 to complete the doubles sweep. Gaucho duo Erik Johnsson/Miles Seemann won in an 8-4 triumph against Ascarrunz/Thoen at No. 2 doubles and the pairing of Teague Hamilton and Andrew Riminton collected their team-high sixth victory at court #3 after beating the Highlanders' Mills/Waase 8-2.
The Gauchos never gave up their 1-0 lead as they won all but one singles match en route to the 6-1 victory.
At No. 1 singles, junior Tobias Galskov continued his recent stretch of strong play and extended his winning streak to six matches.
"The tennis on court 1 was really high quality," stated Davis. "It was really good to see that level of tennis being played out here."
Galskov defeated Radford's Nicholas Sayer in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (5) to reach double digits in wins on the dual match season.
Freshman Teague Hamilton and junior Miles Seemann each posted their fifth victory in their last six matches. Hamilton was first off the courts with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Janken Thoen at No. 5 singles and Miles Seemann won the clinching match at No. 6 singles, downing Radford's Aymeric Autones 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Sasha Gryaznov recorded a victory at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Javier Waase and junior Ziad Sultan dispatched Patrick O'Keefe 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for his third straight victory.
"I was really, really pleased with the quality of tennis played today," said Coach Marty Davis."We knew these guys were a little better than Georgetown and we know Penn is a little better than that, so we need to keep building and getting better."
The Gauchos will complete their trio of matches against East Coast teams on Tuesday, when they host Penn at 1:30 p.m. at the Rec Cen Courts.
