Gauchos Narrowly Edged by St. John’s, 4-3

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Gauchos (3-8) took another tough loss at home on Wednesday after falling in a 4-3 decision to St. John's (4-3). UC Santa Barbara dropped the doubles point and split the singles matches in the heartbreaking loss.

UC Santa Barbara got off to a strong start in doubles with an 8-4 victory from the top pairing of Tobias Galskov and Ziad Sultan but St. John's quickly erased the Gauchos' momentum with back-to-back victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

New UCSB pairing, Erik Johnsson and Miles Seemann were defeated 8-4 by nationally-ranked duo #52 Del Nunzio/Reyes and St. John's Every/Livi dropped Gauchos Hamilton/Riminton in an 8-6 decision to clinch the doubles point for the Red Storm.

In singles, the Gauchos received victories from juniors Tobias Galskov, Ziad Sultan, and Miles Seemann at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 singles, respectively, but St. John's won at the remaining courts to take the 4-3 victory.

Tobias Galskov continued to impress at No. 1 singles to extend his winning streak to four as he snapped his opponent's undefeated streak at four. Galskov only lost a total of two games in his straight set 6-0, 6-2 victory over Erick Reyes to put the Gauchos on the board and tie the match.

St. John's won the next two matches to push their lead to 3-1. Freshman Teague Hamilton suffered his first loss at home, dropping in straight sets against Robert Livi 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Sasha Gryaznov was downed 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Miles Seemann collected his third dual victory at No. 6 singles in a 6-1, 7-5 triumph against Michael-John Every to pull the Gauchos to within one.

The match was still up for grabs, as both remaining matches played into the third set, but the Gauchos couldn't complete the comeback as freshman Erik Johnsson was narrowly defeated by Vaidik Munshaw 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

The two teams continued play at No. 2 singles where Ziad Sultan came back from a set down to take his match in the third set tiebreaker to make the final score 4-3.

UCSB will return to action with a pair of weekend matches at the Rec Cen Courts. The Gauchos will take on Georgetown on Saturday, March 8 at 10:00 a.m. and Radford on Sunday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
