SEATTLE, Wash. – The Gauchos began the regular season on a high note with an exciting 4-3 win against the Portland Pilots in Seattle, Wash. on Friday night. The match came down to court 6, where sophomore Andrew Riminton broke serve at 5-4 in the third set of his match and won the tiebreak to notch a win for the Gauchos.

UC Santa Barbara won the doubles point and split their singles matches en route to the 4-3 victory.

In doubles action, UCSB had no trouble adjusting to the new rules implemented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and won two out of three doubles matches to grab the early 1-0 lead. Under the ITA's new experimental scoring, doubles matches have been shortened from an 8-game pro set to a 6-game set.

Tobias Galskov and Miles Seemann teamed up at court 2 to defeat Portland's deLaubenfels/Andreasen 6-2 and on court 3 UCSB duo Teague Hamilton/Andrew Riminton beat Hu Kwo/Guay 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.

Singles was back and forth affair that led to an exciting finish at court 6, where Andrew Riminton battled Portland's Kent Andreasen. Riminton won the first set 6-2 but lost the tiebreak in second set to tie the match at one set apiece. Andreasen had to opportunity to serve out the match at 5-4 but Riminton broke serve and won the tiebreak to win the match for the Gauchos 4-3.

The ITA is also experimenting with new scoring rules for singles matches, implementing no ad scoring in each set and a tiebreak at 5-all.

Freshman Erik Johnsson and junior #79 Tobias Galskov were impressive in their dual match debuts for the Gauchos. Johnsson was first off the court with a straight set victory against Portland's Justin Guay, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Galskov also won in straight sets, defeating Michael Hu Kwo 6-5, 6-5 at court 2.

Freshman Teague Hamilton dropped his match 6-4, 6-5 at the No. 4 position. Junior Ziad Sultan and senior Sasha Gryaznov both lost in tough three-set matches at courts 1 and 3, respectively.

The Gauchos continue their road trip on Saturday afternoon against #37 Washington at the same venue in Seattle, Wash. before traveling to Eugene, Ore. to face the #52 Oregon Ducks on Monday. Action is set to begin at 3:00 PM at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday.
