LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara junior Ziad Sultan fell short in his upset bid against highly regarded UCLA freshman Mackie McDonald in the semifinals at the 57th Annual SoCal Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday.
Sultan was the last Gaucho standing at the SoCal Intercollegiate tournament, reaching the semifinals after posting wins over players from teams including UCSD, Cal Poly, and BYU. Sultan was narrowly defeated in the tiebreaker of the first set 7-6(5) and lost the second set 6-2 to be eliminated from the tournament just short of a finals bid.
The Gauchos concluded the fall portion of their schedule and will return to the courts for dual-match action beginning January 17th against the University of Portland.
