MALIBU, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara junior Tobias Galskov added three more wins on Day 2 of the ITA Regionals to advance to the quarterfinals in the singles draw and the Round of 16 in doubles play. Two more UCSB doubles teams moved on to the Round of 16 and four Gauchos advanced to the fourth round in the consolation singles bracket to cap a successful day for the UCSB men.
After a strong start to the tournament on Friday, junior transfer Tobias Galskov recorded more impressive victories on Saturday. Beginning in doubles, Galskov and partner Ziad Sultan dominated UCLA's Tachi/Guzman 8-3 to advance to the Round of 16. Galskov faced Ryoto Tachi again, this time in singles play, and came back from one set down to defeat the UCLA Bruin 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance in the tournament. In his third match of the day, Galskov clinched a spot in the quarterfinals with a win against the host school's David Sofaer 7-6, 7-5.
Three more UCSB doubles tandems were in action on Saturday, with two of those teams winning to move on in the tournament. Sasha Gryaznov and Luke Steeb recorded a victory over Agbayani/Hernandez (UCI) 8-5 and freshmen team Teague Hamilton and Erik Johnsson took down SDSU's Gelbrich/Khachatryan 8-3. Corey Karen and Miles Seemann dropped their match against Arizona 8-5 and were eliminated from the tournament.
In the singles consolation bracket, Gauchos Ziad Sultan, Corey Karen, Sasha Gryaznov, Miles Seemann all advanced to the fourth round.
Junior Ziad Sultan was victorious against Meidy Chazeau (Grand Canyon) 6-4, 6-3 and in his second match of the day, defeated San Diego State's Freddy Gelbrich 6-1, 7-6. Senior Sasha Gryaznov rolled past Big West rival Naveen Beasley of Cal Poly 6-1, 6-1 and dropped nationally-ranked player #81 Romain Kalaydjian (San Diego) 6-4, 3-6 10-1. Miles Seemann defeated UC Irvine's Jonathan Hammel 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 and then won in straight sets over Jacob Spizman (Grand Canyon) 6-4, 6-1 to advance in the consolation bracket. After receiving a bye into the third round, freshman Corey Karen recorded a victory over Adrian Legarreta (Grand Canyon) 6-4, 7-6 to also move on in the consolation draw.
Freshmen Luke Steeb and Erik Johnsson both won in the second round of the consolation bracket but dropped their second matches of the day to be eliminated from the tournament. Teague Hamilton, who received a bye into the third round of the consolation draw, was defeated by Danilo Casanova (Hawai'i) 6-4, 6-3 and was also eliminated.
UCSB will continue play at the ITA Regionals in Malibu on Sunday, beginning at 9AM with a round of singles, 2 rounds of doubles, and consolation matches.
