SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Gauchos won 10 of their 13 matches in Sunday's finale to finish up the UCSB Classic on a high note. UCSB claimed a first place finish in B Flight Doubles, C Flight Doubles, and C Flight Singles as well as a 2nd place finish in B Flight Singles.
The Gauchos were strong in doubles on Sunday, winning first place in two of the three flights. The finals of B Flight Doubles featured two UCSB teams facing off against each other with Miles Seemann and Corey Karen edging Sasha Gryaznov and Luke Steeb 8-6 to take the top spot.
The Gauchos were represented in the B Flight Singles finals for the second year in a row, with senior Sasha Gryaznov taking on Brett Bacharach of UC Davis for first place. Gryaznov battled back from a down a set to tie the match but was edged in the third set 6-4 and finished runner-up.
Five more Gauchos played in the B Flight Singles, including newcomer Corey Karen, who impressed with a 5th place finish by defeating UCSD's Kona Luu in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Erik Johnsson won his third straight match to finish in 9th place, winning against Andrew Malozsak (UCSD) 6-2, 6-3. Miles Seemann lost only 2 total games in his victory over Adam Luba of UC Davis 6-0, 6-2 and Luke Steeb added a win against UCSD's Max Dutreix 6-2, 6-1. Filip Karlsson, who won the C Flight Singles, moved up to play Robin Kiyabu (LMU), who won 15th place by default, and rolled past him 6-2, 6-2.
In Flight A singles, Ziad Sultan and Luke Bohuslav (LMU), who defaulted into 5th and 7th place, respectively, faced off against each other with Ziad Sultan defeating Bohuslav 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Teague Hamilton won in a three set battle against Horea Porutiu (UCSD) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to finish in 11th place.
UCSB will continue the tournament portion of their schedule next week at the ITA Regionals, which are set to take place October 18-22.
