SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB men's tennis team made their season debut at the UCSB Classic this Friday, winning half of their singles matches and half of their doubles matches on the first day of competition. The Gauchos saw all six of their new players hit the courts, with mixed results, and a relatively successful return for four members of the Big West Champion squad from last season.
Gaucho veterans junior Ziad Sultan and sophomore Andrew Riminton both won in straight sets against their opponents in A Flight singles. Sultan defeated Horea Porutiu (UCSD) 6-3, 6-4 and will face California's Wyatt Houghton on Saturday. Riminton made quick work of Northern Arizona's Alex Locci 6-1, 6-1 to move on in the tournament to play Alec Adamson (UCD).
New additions, Tobias Galskov and Teague Hamilton, lost in tough battles in A Flight singles. Junior transfer Galskov lost his match against Nikhil Jayashankar (CAL) 7-5, 6-2 while freshman Teague Hamilton was edged in three sets after gaining a one set lead. Both players fell into the A Flight back draw and will play three more singles matches over the weekend.
UCSB struggled in the A Flight doubles, dropping both of their matches. The pairing of Riminton/Hamilton lost to UC San Diego's Porutiu/Luu 8-6 and Gaucho duo Sultan/Galskov was defeated 8-4 by California's Sanford/Jayashankar.
In B Flight singles, senior Sasha Gryaznov won in a tough three set match against Max Dutreix (UCSD) 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 and newcomer Corey Karen defeated UC San Diego's Andrew Malozsak in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Gryaznov will play Cal's Jack Sanford and Karen will face off against Northern Arizona's Kester Black on Saturday morning. Veteran Miles Seemann dropped his match against UC Davis player Bryce McKelvie. Rookies Erik Johnsson and Luke Steeb also lost.
The Gauchos fared better in doubles in the B Flight, with both doubles pairings recording wins against their opponents from UC Davis. Gryaznov continued his successful opening day, partnering Luke Steeb to a win over Miller/Kelley (UCD) 8-5. Miles Seemann and Corey Karen paired up to defeat McKelvie/Luba (UCD) 8-2.
Freshman Filip Karlsson recorded a win in the Gauchos only C Flight match, with a win over UCLA's Yamani 6-2, 6-1.
The Gauchos will continue onto Day 2 of the UCSB Classic on Saturday. Doubles will begin at 9AM followed by two rounds of singles matches.
