SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore Axel Bouillin was named Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week due to his stellar performance on the Gauchos' four-game road trip over Spring Break.
Though the Gauchos went 1-3 on the road trip, Bouillin did his part by winning all four of his singles matches at the No.3 position and added a win in doubles.
Bouillin began the road trip with a win over Utah State's Matt Sweet in straight sets to help the Gauchos roll past the Aggies, 6-1.
The sophomore continued his strong play with the sole Gaucho victory at #48 Boise State in a three set win over the Bronco's Scott Sears 7-6, 0-6, (10-6). Bouillin teamed up with senior Benjamin Recknagel at the No. 2 position to record an 8-6 win in doubles against Boise State's Patton/Sears, though the Gauchos were narrowly edged for the doubles point due to losses courts 1 and 3.
Bouillin added two more wins in Colorado to extend his winning streak to six matches in a row. Bouillin defeated Denver's Henry Craig in dominant fashion 6-2, 6-0 and was victorious against Air Force's Alex Grubbs 6-4, 6-3.
The Gauchos will return to the courts to begin conference play this weekend against UC Riverside on Saturday, Apr. 6 and UC Irvine on Sunday, Apr. 7. Action is set to begin at 1:00 PM (PST) on the Rec Cen Courts for both matches.
