BOISE, Idaho – UCSB men's tennis saw their three-game win streak snapped against #48 Boise State, dropping their record to 2-5 on the road and 7-6 overall on the dual match season. The Gauchos lost two out of three doubles matches and all but one singles match to a Broncos team that has now won 27 straight home matches at the Appleton Tennis Center.
The Gauchos lost in a close battle in doubles at courts 1 and 3 by identical scores of 8-5. UCSB team Axel Bouillin/Benjamin Recknagel won 8-6 at court 2 but the Broncos already clinched the doubles point to grab a quick 1-0 lead.
The Gauchos battled hard in singles but lost five out of their six matches, with the only UCSB win coming at court 3. At the No. 3 position, sophomore Axel Bouillin faced the Broncos' Scott Sears and took the first set 7-6 but dropped the second set 0-6. Bouillin battled back to win the tie-breaker 10-6 and claim a point for the Gauchos to avoid the sweep. UCSB's Mbonisi Ndimande also kept his match close at court 2, but lost to Boise State's Nathan Sereke in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.
UCSB saw a couple of individual winning streaks come to an end. Sophomore Ziad Sultan had his seven match win streak snapped at court 4, losing in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Senior Benjamin Recknagel, who was bumped up to the No. 1 position, saw his four match win streak end against the 29th-ranked singles player in the country Andrew Bettles, 6-1, 6-0.
The Gauchos ran out a slightly altered lineup in the loss to Boise State. Freshman Andrew Riminton moved up to the No. 5 court and Miles Seemann saw his first singles action of the season at court 6, but both lost in straight sets.
UCSB will continue their four-game road trip in Denver, Colorado to face the University of Denver at the Gates Tennis Center on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 12 PM (MT). The Gauchos will then travel to Colorado Springs to face the U.S. Air Force Academy the next day at 9 AM (MT) at the Lifetime Fitness Center.
