SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After sweeping Westmont in their home opener, the UCSB men's tennis team will head on the road to face No.3 - ranked UCLA in Los Angeles this Wednesday, January 23.
The Gauchos (1-0) opened their dual match season last Wednesday against local No.8-ranked NAIA opponent, Westmont (0-1) and dominated them in a 7-0 sweep. Led by seniors Benjamin Recknagel and Mbonisi Ndimande, the Gauchos were perfect to start their season and saw impressive debuts by rookies Jacob Johnson and Andrew Riminton.
Coach Marty Davis called the Gauchos' first win, "a bit of a confidence builder" heading into this week's match-up against UCLA, who are sure to be a much tougher opponent. The Bruins boast a No. 3 ranking and a couple nationally ranked players including No. 12 Marcos Giron and No. 41 Dennis Mkrtchian.
After the Gauchos' improbable win over #19 Texas Tech last season, the No. 68-ranked Gauchos will be looking for another upset this Wednesday in Westwood.
Action is set to start at 1:30 PM (PST) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
