SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB men's tennis team will kick off the dual match portion of their season this Wednesday, January 16th at home against local NAIA opponent, Westmont.
The Gauchos, who are opening up the season ranked 68th in the ITA National Rankings, are returning six of their starters from last season and will have three new additions to the 2013 roster. Seniors Benjamin Recknagel and Mbonisi Ndimande, who both had strong showings in preseason tournaments, will be joining Max Glenn for their final seasons as Gauchos. Juniors Sasha Gryaznov, Axel Bouillin and sophomore Ziad Sultan round out the returnees from last season.
UCSB will also be welcoming newcomers Miles Seemann, a sophomore transfer from SBCC, and freshmen Jake Johnson and Andrew Rimington, who arrived from Australia last week, to the 2013 squad.
The Gauchos will face off against Westmont, who is ranked 8th in the NAIA, for their first match of the season. After falling just two points short of winning the Big West conference title last season, Coach Marty Davis believes the team is "in the hunt" for an 8th Big West Championship this year.
The match will begin this Wednesday at 1:30 at the Rec Cen Courts.
