LOS ANGELES, Calif. – With several of Thursday's matches rained out, the Gauchos had a busy day of tennis at the SoCal Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles on Friday.

Mbonisi Ndimande and Ziad Sultan's matches were already in progress Thursday before the showers postponed play until Friday morning. Ndimande, who built a 2-0 lead against BYU's Keaton Cullimore before the rain came down, went on to win the first set 6-4 but then dropped the next two, 6-3, 6-0.

Sophomore Ziad Sultan gained a "lucky loser" spot in the main draw after losing in the qualifying draw. Sultan won his first set Thursday, 7-6 but lost 6-3, 6-1 in the next two sets to Thibaut Visy of USD.

Benjamin Recknagel, the sole Gaucho to make it to the second round, continued his strong play and won his match against UCLA's Warren Hardie 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to move onto the Quarterfinals. He will face Clarke Spinosa of USD on Saturday.

The remaining three Gauchos competed in the consolation singles bracket after their losses in the first round of the main draw. Ndimande faced Kona Luu of UCSD and won in dominating fashion in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 and Sultan defeated his opponent, Pepperdine's Damien Gryzelko, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to move onto the Quarterfinals of the main back draw. Sophomore Axel Bouillin dropped his match against Camill Salomon of UCSD 7-5, 6-4 to end his singles play in the tournament.

UCSB also began the first round of doubles play in the main draw with both doubles tandems moving onto the Quarterfinals. Ndimande and Sultan, seeded fourth in the tournament, defeated UCSD's Trevor Dell and Kona Luu 8-4. Recknagel and Axel Bouillin also won their match, dropping Ben Eger and Whitman Hough of APU 8-5.

The Gauchos will continue in the Quarterfinals of singles, consolation singles, and doubles play Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM.
